7 Guiding Principals

We all have our own unique combination of challenges to work through and overcome in our lives, Dr Will Menninger of the Menninger Clinic Foundation developed the “Criteria of Emotional Maturity, comprising a 7 part guide to mental health.  And we couldn’t agree more.

While recognizing some of these points will be easier to adapt to than others, these are achievable concepts that we can work towards in our daily lives.  Personal change doesn’t happen overnight, but can take a few months.  Direction in life can be a wonderful thing.  When you are ready you can’t go wrong with these 7.

Criteria of Emotional Maturity

 

  • The ability to deal constructively with reality
  • The capacity to adapt to change
  • A relative freedom from symptoms that are produced by tensions and anxieties
  • The capacity to find more satisfaction in giving than receiving
  • The capacity to relate to other people in a consistent manner with mutual satisfaction and helpfulness
  • The capacity to sublimate, to direct one’s instinctively hostile energy into creative and constructive outlets
  • The capacity to love
