by Mark Battle, C.S.W.M.,A.C.S.W 36 pages Text.              Bio

This study guide offers perspectives on the fundamentals of management that every human service professional should know. The theory and processes identified here will help each practitioner perform better as an informed part of the organization. It will provide a knowledge base for moving into the role of manager in a human service institution. The guide is not designed to endorse a particular school of management theory. It accepts the view that each school has contributed something of value to the practice of modem management today. Further, the presentation is not a discussion of the current issues in management practice. e.g. Diversity, Social Policy, Labor Management Relations, Affirmative Action, Cost Containment, Faith-based Services, etc. It goes directly to those basics with which human service managers and those who wish to become managers should become familiar.

The guide is organized in sections. Section 1 offers a comprehensive view of the human service organi7ation within which all of the preceding management theory is practiced. Section II presents a brief sketch of the evolution of human service management. It includes a list of books and authors that should be a part of your professional library. Section 111 presents the theoretical foundation in terms of categories of theory, significant management concepts and terms. Section IV presents the primary specialized areas or zones of management practice in the structure of organizations. In addition, it articulates the five basic functions central to all management practice. It should be noted that a set of review questions follows each section. Finally, it may be assumed that the definition of management central to this guide is: The Art and Science of delivering or producing a body of work using People, Information, Materials and Resources; sometimes called “Getting It Done.”
